Silence had reigned at the dinner table after Christian had mentioned the Vampire civil war. Julian had braced himself for question after question after that, but instead both Elizabeth and Henry just drank their wine–a lot of wine–and stared blankly ahead. Maybe they had just reached their limits of strangeness that evening. Maybe they were simply overloaded with everything going on and trying to sort some of it out. Whatever it was, it had them quiet.

Christian had opened his mouth to say something to his parents plenty of times, but had closed it without actually saying a word. He then went back to pushing the beef around on his plate.

The dinner smelled delicious and the taste was just as good, but Julian was guessing that, like him, Christian had no hunger for the food. The thought of pressing his lips against Daemon’s throat and sinking his fangs into that golden flesh though had his mouth watering and his fangs ached just thinking about it. He imagined the Thornes’ horror if they heard that. It would have even disgusted him a day or so ago. It had, in fact, disgusted him. But now, the thought of suckling on Daemon was sexy and comforting at the same time.

William had tried to introduce conversation–light and airy–which would go on for a few moments before tapering off into that thick, heavy silence that felt like it was crushing Julian beneath it. His eyes kept shifting to the door where Daemon, Arcius and Balthazar had disappeared through. The Vampire King had ordered him to stay behind. When Julian reached for his mind now, Daemon was still telling him to remain where he was as Daemon was coming back.

Coming back? Julian straightened in his chair. Ridley looked curiously at him. What? Why? With Fiona?

No, Eyros and Arcius are dealing with that. As my loyal retainers should, Daemon sounded pleased.

Julian’s eyebrows raised. Balthazar’s acting like Eyros, huh?

Yes, he is.

And that makes you happy?

That makes him happy, Daemon clarified. He has felt alone and an outsider for too long. This shows him that he is not. So I will be back momentarily.

And then Daemon swept in. Julian jumped up and helped him off with his wolf coat. He petted it, remembering the soft fur of the wolf he’d held earlier as he did so. Elizabeth frowned, but said nothing. It caused him to wonder if it was weird for him to do this, but then he realized he would have done it for a lover regardless if such a lover was a king. This wasn’t because Daemon was his Master either.

But Elizabeth was suspicious. He understood that. All of this stuff was the exact opposite of what Elizabeth really wanted for them. One of the staff came up and took the thick fur coat from his hands to bring it back to their rooms. Two staff members held their chairs out for them as Daemon took his place at the head of the table with Julian beside him.
